If the situation is urgent
Call 911 if someone is in immediate danger or needs emergency medical help.
If you or another caregiver is in emotional distress or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 or use the 988 Lifeline chat. The service is available at no cost.
Before you make the first call
You do not need a complete plan. It can help to write down:
- where the person receiving care lives;
- the kind of help you need most urgently;
- whether you need in-home help, transportation, meals, adult day services, benefits counseling, or respite;
- what you can afford, if anything; and
- when you need support to begin.
Ask the person you reach what is available, who qualifies, whether there is a waiting list, and what the next step is. Keep the name and number of each referral in one place.
